Welcome to Milton Canada Day

Thank You

To begin, as a committee we’d like to give our heartfelt thanks to the people of Milton who braved the heat during Canada Day to come to this event. Also, a huge thank you to the young volunteers who worked tirelessly in that heat to assist us in preparing the park on Friday and Saturday, helping us with the many tasks necessary on the day of the event, and finally in the long and tedious clean-up of the Fairgrounds Monday. Yes, we have to do that – to pick up all the litter that’s left behind.

It seems an appropriate time to clear up a lot of misconceptions about our event. It is NOT a town event although we do receive support from the Town of Milton. The Milton Canada Day committee consists of 11 volunteers who begin to work on the event starting in September and going full tilt until July 2 after clean-up. None of us are politicians, none of us are Town employees. We are just residents of Milton who have been doing this event for longer than any of us care to remember. We all have our separate jobs on the committee such as entertainment, attractions, volunteers, advertising, and sponsorship to name a few. Our event expenses are between 90 and 100 thousand dollars depending on the entertainment and attractions we hire each year – fireworks alone are just shy of 20 thousand dollars. So that’s the amount of money we need to raise through sponsorships in order to keep this a FREE event for all the families of Milton and surrounding area. A very important goal for us is that a family could come to our event for the whole day and not spend any money at all. With the exception of the carnival rides, all our entertainment and attractions are free.

Sponsorship proposals are sent out to as many sponsors as we can think of that might be willing to support us. Depending on the level of cash or in-kind sponsorship we receive, we allot a consistent amount of signage and recognition to our sponsors in the park. We do offer the largest sponsors the opportunity to do self-promotion, but to be honest very few of them are interested in doing that. Like most organizations, they can’t get the manpower on a holiday to make it practical to do. We have read and discussed at length the objections to accepting money from certain sponsors and frankly we don’t have the luxury of turning down a cash donation without it affecting the quality of the event. When we meet as a committee, we all leave our personal feelings at the door and look at the big picture. “What’s in the best interest of the event itself?” Our job is to make this the most entertaining and appealing FREE day that we can.

Finally, we welcome any assistance and new members we can get on our committee. It’s certainly not a closed group but despite our annual appeals, it’s been the same 11 people for years now. Feel free to contact any of us through Contact Us And thank you once again for your support over the years – to those who have sponsored us, and those who have come to help us celebrate Canada’s birthday. We hope you’ve had as much fun attending as we have had organizing it.
